ONE of Cork’s oldest charities will this month hold a concert to raise funds to help furnish accommodation for homeless veterans.
Members of the Cork Penny Dinners High Hopes Choir will join with representatives of the charity ALONE to present ‘Voices from a Chapel’ at UCC’s Honan Chapel at 7.30pm on Friday, December 15.
The concert will feature Jack O’Rourke and special guests and will raise funds for ONE, the Organisation of National Ex-service Personnel (Óglaigh Náisiúnta na hÉireann) Collins Barracks Cork.
ONE is currently refurbishing a new six-bedroom hostel for homeless veterans in St Luke’s, and Caitriona Twomey, volunteer co-ordinator with Cork Penny Dinners, said the concert in the Honan Chapel will raise funds to help furnish the hostel’s bedrooms.
“We wanted to do something nice and we thought it would be nice to furnish the bedrooms with beds, wardrobes, bedside lockers, and that would be something very worthwhile to do,” Ms Twomey said.
“Many of us in Penny Dinners would have family retired from the Army or the Navy, so we would have that strong connection with the veterans and we would be very anxious to help our homeless veterans.”
The Cork Penny Dinners High Hopes Choir was formed in 2014 under the tutelage of David Brophy of the RTÉ Concert Orchestra, and has been going strong ever since.
Ms Twomey said ‘Voices from a Chapel’ will pay tribute to three giants of Irish music who passed away this year.
“We’re going to cover a few songs from Christy Dignam, Sinead O’Connor and Shane MacGowan, just to remember them in the year we lost them,” Ms Twomey said.
“We have Jack O’Rourke headlining, and we also have Darragh McGann from Cobh, and we have Irene O’Connell, and some other surprise guests that we haven’t revealed yet.”
Ms Twomey said tickets for the concert will be €25 and will be available at Cork Penny Dinners on Little Hanover Street.
