I Am A Veteran – Deirdre Carbery

Through our new campaign, the Organisation of National Ex-Service Personnel (ONE) is highlighting our talented, highly skilled and diverse group of veterans, showcasing members who are making a difference in our communities and across Irish and international society.

Our fourth veteran’s story features Deirdre Carbery. Deirdre served for 15 years in the Irish Defence Forces as an Infantry Officer. She served with the United Nations in Lebanon and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Deirdre is a Gender, Diversity & Inclusion Advisor, working with international and national organisations, to promote gender equality. She is the first woman appointed to the Board of Directors of Óglaigh Náisiúnta na hÉireann (ONE) and has been leading our efforts to promote and drive actions towards a more diverse and inclusive organisation.

Deirdre highlights her positive experiences from her time in the Irish Defence Forces and reflects back on the bonds that are made as a result of military service. After transitioning to the private sector in January 2020, she can now reflect back on how her training and operational experiences made her more resilient, adaptable and confident.
