Happy International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers to those who have served or are serving.
Today, we recognise the service and sacrifice of peacekeepers, past and present, and the commitment of the communities they serve to the cause of peace.
Since Ireland’s first United Nations peacekeeping deployment in 1958, the Defence Forces have worked, continuously, without taking a solitary day off, to save and change lives in the world’s most fragile political and security situations. We hold the longest unbroken peacekeeping record of any country in the world and today we have 417 Defence Forces members serving in 12 Missions in 14 countries.
88 members of the Defence Forces lost their lives whilst serving overseas as part of a peacekeeping mission or battlegroup on deployment – we remember them all on this occasion. Their names can be found here: https://military.ie/en/overseas-deployments/roll-of-honour/roll-of-honour.html
