Jimmy Mills (58) and Tony Bishop (60) both served in 2 Infantry Battalion in Cathal Brugha Barracks, both are also United Nations Peacekeeping Veterans.
“I have seen the work that the ONE charity does for my comrades in need and just felt I can do something to support it,” said Jimmy.
Tony says, I know of some of my fellow veterans who have fallen on hard times and have been accommodated in the Veteran Houses and many more have accessed the services that O. N. E. provide, especially in relation to Mental Health.
Óglaigh Náisiúnta na hÉireann (Organisation of National Ex-Service Personnel-ONE) is a registered charity for veterans of the Irish Defence Forces. ONE was established on 10 March 1951 and its primary objective is to support the needs of Irish veterans by the provision of accommodation to homeless veterans in its Veterans’ Homes and the provision of other advice and support to veterans through its nationwide network of Branches and Veterans’ Support Centres.
ONE’s services are available to all veterans of the Defence Forces and we also facilitate homeless veterans from other countries living in Ireland from time to time. ONE currently provides accommodation (board and lodging) for approximately 51 veterans, who otherwise would be homeless, in its four residential homes in Cobh, Athlone, Dublin and Letterkenny. ONE has created a nationwide network of Veteran’s Support Centres and is developing a 6-bedroom facility in Cork City leading to the availability of 57 single rooms for homeless veterans.
